The Namib is a drying desert at the west coast of Africa. It is on the area of Namibia and contains the Namib Naukluft National park. One knows the meaning of the name earliest with „empty place", or „place where is nothing".
The expansion of the Namib amounts to from the north to the south (up to the Oranje) approximately 2,000 km, up to 160 km into the country inside. In its northern part to the border river Kunene forms it the skeleton coast well-known as ship cemetery, where numerous ship frameworks rise up out of the sand. Their middle section accommodates two of the most important cities of the country with Swakopmund and whale bay and the only high sea port of Namibia. In the south again length the diamond restricted area extends over load-cuts to approximately 500 km, in which also today still jewels are. The emphasis of the diamond promotion shifted however at the Oranje in the Atlantic (offshore dismantling). The diamond production constitutes well a third of the world export.

Namib Desert Animals and Plants
A number of unusual species of plants and animals are found only in Namib desert. One of these is Welwitschia mirabilis, one of the most unusual species. Welwitschia is a shrub-like plant, but grows just two long strap-shaped leaves continuously throughout its lifetime. These leaves may be several meters long, gnarled and twisted from the desert winds. The taproot of the plant develops into a flat, concave disc in age. Welwitschia is notable for its survival in the extremely arid conditions in the Namib, sometimes deriving moisture from the coastal sea fogs.
In the animals the high species richness and endemism is made up largely of reptiles. They have evolved adaptations to survive in this harsh environment when most birds and large mammals have not. There are almost 70 reptile species in the ecoregion, of which more than 25 are considered endemic to the ecoregion. Five of these are strictly-endemic to the dry Namib Desert, and at least 20 species are regarded as nearly endemic to the ecoregion (WWF database). Several endemic reptiles, including two desert lizards, the wedge-snouted sand lizard (Meroles cuneirostris) and the small-scaled sand lizard (M. micropholidotus), the barking gecko (Ptenopus kochi) and the day gecko (Rhoptropus bradfieldi) are unusual in that they all dive beneath the sand to escape danger (Branch 1998). Also wide spreaded are: fringe-toed lizard, golden mole, jackal, sidewinder, viper, web-footed gecko
Namib Climate
The Namib is the oldest desert of the world and at the same time one of the most inhospitable places of the planet. With daytime temperatures of over 60° Celsius, night temperatures of clearly under 0° Celsius, dry periods persisting for many decades as well as frequent sandstorms are exposed to plants and animals extreme living conditions. Since these remained stable during very long periods however, it nevertheless a whole set of organisms created to adapt and (only) to become here domestic, like e.g. the Welwitschia mirabilis.
The extreme dryness of the Namib( the same is like South Africa Kalahari desert Hoodia) is on offshore to lead back cold Meeresströmungen (similarly the Atacama in Chile): at the coast of the Atlantiks flows from of Antarctic the coming Benguela river and supplies to the region comparatively cold Antarctic water. This leads to the condensation of the humidity contained in air. By the cold water the layering of air is always very stable, it gives therefore as well as no high-reaching convection and concomitantly no rainfalls. But there are nebulas in the coastal region on approximately 200 days in the year. This fog settles in the cold early morning hours and is for many of the here living animals and plants the only source of humidity.
Drinking places are RSR in the Namib, and so many animals and plants developed every now and then skurrile methods, in order to collect water: During the night and in the early morning hours the constant south-west wind drives thick nebula banks up to 80 kilometers far in the interior, and so special striking, is used muzzle or Blatt-Formen around the life-donating wet from the fog „to out-comb”. A particularly rafinierte method for water winning has the endemic nebula drunkard beetle found, which stretches its abdomen upward, the fog to it to condense and in such a way won water to the mouth gutters leaves. (Techniques like these woke the interest of the science and in the desert research station Gobabeb for their applicability in the desert agriculture were examined.)
